Keys to the Kingdom: Impressioning, Privilege Escalation, Bumping, and Other Key-Based Attacks Against Physical Locks

 Deviant Ollam

Lockpicking has become a popular topic with many in the security community. While many have chosen to learn the fine art of opening locks without keys, few people explore the fascinating methods of attack that are possible WITH keys. Keys to the Kingdom addresses the topics of impressioning, master key escalation, skeleton keys, and bumping attacks that go well beyond any treatment of these topics in the author's previous book, Practical Lock Picking. This material is all new and focuses on locks currently in use as well as ones that have recently emerged on the market. Hackers and pen testers or persons tasked with defending their infrastructure and property from invasion will find these techniques uniquely valuable. As with Deviant Ollam's previous book, Practical Lock Picking, Keys to the Kingdom includes full-color versions of all diagrams and photographs. Check out the companion website which includes instructional videos that provide readers with a full-on training seminar from the author. Excellent companion to Deviant Ollam's Practical Lock Picking. Understand the typical failings of common security hardware in order to avoid these weaknesses. Learn advanced methods of physical attack in order to be more successful with penetration testing.Detailed full-color photos in the book make learning easy, and companion website is filled with invalualble training videos from Dev!

Contemporary European Architects - Volume 3

Dirk Meyhofer, Philip Jodidio, Wolfgang Amsoneit

Some old masters of Greek architecture

 Harry Douglas

The temptation to wander, with all the recklessness of an amateur, into the traditions of the best architecture, which necessarily could be found only in the history of early Hellenic art, awakened in the author a desire to ascertain who were the individual artists primarily responsible for those architectural standards, which have been accepted without rival since their creation. The search led to some surprise when it was found how little was known or recorded of them, and how great appeared to be the indifference in which they were held by nearly all the writers upon ancient art, as well as by their contemporary historians and biographers. The author therefore has gone into the field of history, tradition and fable, with a basket on his arm, as it were, to cull some of the rare and obscure flowers of this artistic family, dropping into the basket also such facts directly or indirectly associated with the architects of ancient Greece, or their art, as interested him personally. The basket is here set down, containing, if nothing more, at least a brief allusion to no less than eighty-two architects of antiquity. The fact is perfectly appreciated that many fine specimens may have been overlooked; that scant justice has been done those gathered, and that the basket is far too small to contain all that so rich a field could offer. This book, therefore, aims at nothing more than a superficial glance at the subject, and the author will be content if he has accomplished...

A book of bridges

 Walter Shaw Sparrow

Literary projects may be put in two classes. Some are likesteamers that go in a regulated course direct to theirdestinations, while others tack here and there like sailingships, governed by a zigzag progress. The subject of bridges belongs to this latter class. Forfive-and-twenty years I have tried to order it into amethodised hobby. As well try to teach a hive of honey-bees never to visit certain flowers in a garden, and neverto fly beyond certain pathways and hedges. Yet a writercannot help rebelling when his chosen theme declines toplay in the game of authorship, and deviates from manycareful plans which are made for its benefit. Every chapterin this book has been rewritten eight or ten times, yet mysailing ship has not become an Atlantic liner. My wish for a long time was to show the evolution ofbridges in about seven hundred photographic illustrations, with eight lines of text under each print; and inpreparation for this work I collected materials, andreceived invaluable help from other pontists, particularlyfrom Mr. Frank Brangwyn, Mr. H. T. Crofton, Mr. C. S.Sargisson, Mr. Edgar Wigram, the Rev. O. M. Jackson, andthe Church Missionary Society. Pontist after pontist sentme notes, photographs, sketches; and then FrankBrangwyn suggested that we should work in collaboration. Here was luck indeed! His pictures and drawings would bethe book of art; and the rambling subject, if it passed overmere technique into the human drama, ought to interestthe general reader who does...

The Architecture of Exhibitions: Experiential Design

Alessandro Melis, Rozina Vavetsi, Fabio Finotti

The Architecture of Exhibitions embarks on a comprehensive exploration of creativity and design innovation within exhibition spaces. It describes the fundamental principles of exhibition design, tracing the origins of creativity and considering its evolutionary significance. The book challenges conventional boundaries imposed by rigid classifications, drawing on heuristic studies in biology and the transformative concept of exaptation. It questions the traditional separations between art, science and technology, which often hinder innovation. By advocating for an interdisciplinary approach, it reimagines creativity that transcends conventional limits. Through practice-based research, multidisciplinary case studies and technological innovations, with a focus on generative AI, the book illustrates how modern exhibition spaces actively engage with their audiences, highlighting their profound impact beyond academic discourse. This book is designed for curators, designers and scholars who are passionate about the future of exhibition spaces. It offers a comprehensive understanding through its four-part structure, making it an essential read for anyone interested in the dynamic interplay between art, technology and society. The book is also designed as an instrument for the education of architecture, design and art students.

The New Suburbia

 Becky M. Nicolaides

America's suburbs have been transforming. The conventional story of suburbs as bastions of white, middle-class homeowners no longer describes the suburbs of America's cities. Today they house a more typical cross-section of the nation—rich, poor, Black American, Latino, Asian, immigrant, the unhoused, the lavishly housed, and everyone in between. Stories of everyday suburban life, in the process, have taken on new inflections. Nowhere are these changes more vivid than in Los Angeles. In this suburban metropolis and global powerhouse, lily white suburbs have virtually disappeared, and over two-thirds of the County's suburbs have become majority minority. Examining this vanguard of change from the postwar to the present, The New Suburbia follows the Asian Americans, Black Americans, and Latinos who moved into white neighborhoods that once barred them. They bought homes, enrolled their children in schools, and began navigating suburban life. They faced a choice: would they...

Surrealism and Architecture

 Thomas Mical (Editor)

This is a historically informed examination of architecture's perceived absence in surrealist thought, surrealist tendencies in the theories and projects of modern architecture, and the place of surrealist thought in contemporary design. This book represents current insights into surrealism in the thought and practice of modern architecture. In these essays, the role of the subconscious, the techniques of defamiliarization, aesthetic and social forces affecting the objects, interiors, cities and landscapes of the twentieth century are revealed. The book contains a diversity of voices from across modern art and architecture to bring into focus what is often overlooked in the histories of the modernist avant-garde. This collection examines the practices of writers, artists, architects, and urbanists with emphasis on a critique of the everyday world-view, offering alternative models of subjectivity, artistic effect, and the production of meanings in the built world.Thomas Mical completed his doctorate on Nietzschean thought in De Chirico’s metaphysical paintings. He completed his professional architecture degree at Harvard, and he has worked as a designer in Tokyo and Chicago, and writes on surrealism, cinema, and urbanism. He has taught and lectured on surrealism in the US, Europe, and the Middle East. Currently he is an assistant Professor of Architectural History and Theory at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada.

Less Is Enough: On Architecture and Asceticism

 Pier Vittorio Aureli

“Less is more” goes the modernist dictum. But is it? In an age when we are endlessly urged to do “more with less”, can we still romanticise the pretensions of minimalism? For Pier Vittorio Aureli, the return of “austerity chic” is a perversion of what ought to be a meaningful way of life. Charting the rise of asceticism in early Christianity and its institutionalisation with the medieval monasteries, Aureli examines how the basic unit of the reclusive life – the monk’s cell – becomes the foundation of private property. And from there, he argues, it all starts to go wrong. By late capitalism, asceticism has been utterly aestheticised. It manifests itself as monasteries inspired by Calvin Klein stores, in the monkish lifestyle of Steve Jobs and Apple’s aura of restraint. Amid all the hypocrisy, it must still be possible to reprise the idea of “less” as a radical alternative, as the first step to living the life examined.

Anglo-Saxon Architecture - Volume II

 H M Taylor, Joan Taylor

Volume II of H M Taylor's magisterial work on Anglo-Saxon churches and their architecture. Volume II rounds off the giant lists of every AS church known to us, and attaches quite a few photographs of them at the end. Volume II of course still preserves the detailed descriptions and analyses of churches that are present in Volume I. The first volume gives a succinct guide to the identifiable features of AS churches, and then begins to list most of the AS churches known to us.Volume III goes into immense detail with regards to the identifiable features of AS churches, along with providing floor plans and comparative data for a good number of them. Although the three volume set is the definitive authoritative work on Anglo-Saxon church architecture, there are a few select errors in Taylor's work. They mostly owe their existence to just being written before some archaeological discoveries were made, that shed new light on some particular churches. Taylor provides some corrections throughout his work, particularly in the third volume, but there were still some small fragments of the subject that he missed.Digitised by yours truly, I am also compiling an interactive map of these churches, along with other man-made Anglo-Saxon sites such as earthworks, large burials, crosses and secular buildings. The City as a Project (full)

 Pier Vittorio Aureli

The city is often depicted as a sort of self-organizing chaos. This collection of essays, edited by Pier Vittorio Aureli, makes the case for the opposite hypothesis: The city is always the result of political intention, often in the form of specific architectural projects. Cities are shaped not only by material forces, but also by cultural and didactic visions. This thesis is substantiated by eight thoroughly researched essays scrutinizing a fascinating line-up of urban conditions across more than two thousands years of history: from the political theology of the Islamic city to the political economy of Renaissance architecture; from the rise of public architecture in 17th-century France to the laissez-faire development of the contemporary Greek city; from the exemplary teachings of Jean-Nicolas-Louis Durand to the collaborative work of Hannes Meyer; and from the plan of the Mesoamerican metropolis to that of the Fordist factory floor. In challenging the split between theory and practice, The City as a Project reveals the powerful ways in which the city arises from the constant interaction between ideas and spatial conditions. With contributions by Pier Vittorio Aureli, Fernando Donis, Hamed Khosravi, Amir Djalali, Maria Shéhérazade Giudici, Christopher C. M. Lee, Francesco Marullo, Bernardina Borra, Platon Issaias.

Islamesque: The Forgotten Craftsmen Who Built Europe's Medieval Monuments

 Diana Darke

Who really built Europe's finest Romanesque monuments? Abbots and bishops presiding over holy sites receive mentions aplenty throughout history, while their highly skilled creators remain anonymous. But the buildings speak for themselves. In this groundbreaking book, Middle East cultural historian Diana Darke explores the evidence embedded in medieval monasteries, churches and castles across Europe, from Mont Saint-Michel and the Leaning Tower of Pisa to Durham Cathedral and the Basilica of Santiago de Compostela. Tracing the origins of key decorative and architectural innovations during this pre-Gothic period--acknowledged as the essential foundation of all future European construction styles--she sheds new light on the mystery masons, carpenters and sculptors behind these masterpieces. Her discoveries are dramatic. At a time when Christendom lacked such expertise, Muslim craftsmen, with their advanced understanding of geometry and complex ornamentation styles, dominated the high-end construction industry in Islamic Spain, Sicily and North Africa, spreading their knowledge and techniques across Western Europe. Challenging Euro-centric assumptions about the continent's built heritage, Darke uncovers the profound influence of the Islamic world in 'Christian' Europe, and argues that 'Romanesque' architecture, a fiction first invented by nineteenth-century French art historians, should be recognised as what it truly is: Islamesque.

A View From the Porch: Rethinking Home and Community Design

 Avi Friedman

A View from the Porch is an illuminating collection of 22 essays about the points where design touches life and the big and small things that make us appreciate, or become disconnected from, our homes and neighbourhoods. Drawing on his experiences as an architect, planner, world traveller, and educator, Friedman delves into issues such as the North American obsession with monster homes, the impact of scale on the feeling of comfort in our communities, environmental concerns such as deforestation, innovative recycling methods in building materials, the booming do-it-yourself industry, the decline of craftsmanship, and the role of good design in bringing families together. Written with Friedman's trademark flare A View from the Porch offers a compelling vision of the influence of design in our everyday lives from one of the world's most innovative thinkers. This is a totally revised edition, with new material, of Room for Thought published in 2005.

The Long Slide

 Tucker Carlson

From the host of Tucker Carlson Tonight on Fox News and the New York Times bestselling author of Ship of Fools, a collection of nostalgic writings that underscore America's long slide from innocence to orthodoxy.Thirty years ago, Tucker Carlson got his first job out of college fact checking for a quarterly magazine, and he went on to write for many other publications before becoming the primetime Fox News host he is today. In The Long Slide, Tucker delivers a few of his favorite pieces—annotated with new commentary and insight—to memorialize the tolerance and diversity of thought that the media used to celebrate instead of punish. In snapshots spanning the 1990s to today, he'll take you on a visit to Africa with Al Sharpton and members of the Nation of Islam to stop the civil war in Liberia in 2003, inside the (not-so-) secret armies of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and on the campaign trail with Donald Trump in 2016. In case you...

Interior Interruptions: Rehabilitating the Old to Design the New

 Jean Whitehead

Interior Interruptions examines the role of the ‘palimpsest’ and its relationship to narrative, sustainability, renovation and adaptive reuse. By exploring storytelling, palimpsestic characteristics and techniques, the book argues that these devices play a central role in the consideration of the designed interior.Narrative has a burgeoning relationship with the palimpsest and this approach embraces an aesthetic of incompleteness and imperfection as a site rich response. It recognises the ongoing ‘biography’ or heritage of a building as a form of transient architectural narrative that encourages reuse through the continual process of writing, rewriting, overwriting and unwriting. This process has sustainable, societal, archaeological and textual connotations that can be interpreted as a process of ‘layering’ whereby the architectural shell is viewed as a container; a rich repository that is ‘overlain’ by surface changes, documents architectural and spatial modifications, and is populated by interior fixtures and fittings that all unite to create an ever-changing interior story.Exploring case studies from the UK, Netherlands, Palestine, Belgium, Singapore, Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Brazil, Japan, USA and China and beautifully illustrated in full colour, this book proposes that the act of interior renovation can be viewed as a perpetual form of revisionary storytelling re-imagined as a series of temporal interior ‘interruptions’. It is essential reading for students...

The Dusk of Design

Jose Antonio Lara-Hernandez, Alessandro Melis, Paola Boarin, Priscila Besen

The Dusk of Design explores the intersection of evolutionary theories and architectural design. Drawing inspiration from the concept of exaptation in biology, the book argues that natural selection, as the most successful designer on our planet, thrives on the diversity, variability, and redundancy of creative structures. By transferring these mechanisms to architectural design, the book contends that we can cultivate more resilient and sustainable architecture and cities in the face of environmental crises. This book seeks to illuminate the profound potential of multidisciplinarity by examining case studies from architecture worldwide. By exploring how evolutionary theories can explain various architectural phenomena, it aims to inspire architects, designers, researchers, and students to adopt a holistic and transdisciplinary approach to their work. The book provides a clear and concise overview of evolutionary principles, demonstrating their relevance to architecture. It will showcase a range of case studies that highlight the application of evolutionary theories in solving architectural challenges, such as adaptive reuse, sustainable urban planning, and resilient design in the face of climate change.Ultimately, "The Dusk of Design" aims to bridge the gap between biology and architecture, presenting a fresh perspective on how we can create more innovative, sustainable, and resilient built environments.

Houses for Small Spaces

Emma Peacock, Jade De Souza, Corey Thomas, Gary Takle

With many cities around the globe bursting at the seams, town planners are starting to create smaller lot sizes with which to accommodate our growing populations, while at the same time avoiding environmental impact on our rural spaces. As a result, architects and designers are pushing the boundaries to make best use of the available space. In this book, we take a look at some of these solutions and help you to think outside the square, to create a house that is both aesthetically pleasing and practical for modern living. There are obvious draw backs to building on a smaller site, but there are some great advantages to be had also. Downfalls in design can often result from making compromises on living area, as well as some valuable outdoor space. Conversely, one of the benefits a small footprint provides is that our urban landscapes will not swallow up our valuable natural environment. Additionally, the tighter space encourages familial interaction and good relationships. In Houses for Small Spaces we have combed the globe and found what we consider to be some of the best examples available of excellent use of space, without comprising on living standards. My hope is for you, the reader, to find inspiration from this book and use its ideas to create something special in a small space of your own.
